Attracting insects to your garden
Plants
- List of plants and which insects they attract: [1]
Insect houses
- Instructions for making a lacewing chamber: [2] (I'm not sure the skewering the bottle part is necessary)
- Ladybeetle house plans: [3]
- More ways to create wildlife habitat: [4]
More ideas for creating insect habitat:
- make bundles of twigs and leave them in the undergrowth of your garden;
- attach bundles of short bamboo together, and hang them in sunny places, preferably protected from rain. Mason bees and leefcutter bees love these;
- fill a flower pot with leaves in the fall, then leave it upside down in a damp area;
- drill holes in wooden posts for parasitic wasps to nest in;
- make piles of broken bricks or rocks;
- wooden boards on the ground will provide shelter for ground beetles, earwigs (which will hopefully leave your plants alone!), centipedes, etc.;
Too many insects??
Make a bat house to keep your mosquitoes down!
