How to find what you are looking for
From PermaWiki
There are several ways to find what you are looking for on the wiki.
Contents |
Search
If you know the exact name of what you are looking for (for example you want to look up "microorganism"), just type it in the search bar on the left of the screen.
Table of contents
the wiki table of contents keeps track of the structure of the wiki. It follows the same architecture as the categories, but all in one page and simplified, so that's a good place to start if you have not clue where to look.
Categories
How do they work?
If you don't know the exact article name, you can browse for it in the categories. Each page is in one or several categories, which you can find at the bottom of the page and click on to visit related articles.
On our wiki, the categories are grouped into parent categories, up to the top category: Category:Contents. This is a good place to start. It breaks down into 4 subcategories: "Category:Events", "Category:General information" (which includes of the more educational "wikipedia-type" articles), "Category:Organization" (which includes all the material regarding the MPG organization, such as policies, meeting minutes, etc.), and "Category:Wiki-related" (which includes all the nitty-gritty stuff that keeps the wiki running, such as templates, images, usage instructions like this page, etc.).
How do I use them?
If you would like to add a page to a category, simply add [[Category:CATEGORY NAME]] at the bottom of the page.
If the category appears in red, it means it doesn't have a parent category (it's an orphan category! :( ). You can then click on the red link and add a category --just like you did for the article-- to give it a parent category. Or you can leave it up to someone else, if you are unsure what to do or what category to add it to.
